"MY PHONE CRASHED AFTER 70,000 KSHS WAS SENT TO ME WRONGLY VIA MPESA" SAYS A KIKUYU MAN

A Nairobi court was recently left in stitches after a 51-year-old man claimed that his phone had crashed moments after he received Kshs 70,000 sent to him mistakenly via M-Pesa.

Mr Peter Wachira’s phone went off moments after he received the money from Mrs Joy Makena, who intended to send the money to a relative but got the number wrong by a single digit.  After Safaricom was unable to reverse the transaction, Makena reported the matter to the police leading to the arrest of the suspect.

However, Wachira denied failing to send back the money. According to him, his phone developed a problem and could not function for three days and by then, he had forgotten the number which had sent him the cash.

“It is not true that I withdrew the cash, or refused to resend it to the owner. It’s just that my mobile phone fell down and could not switch on for more than three days, by which time I had forgotten the number through which the money was sent.” Wachira told the court.

The case will be heard again on February 24.
